Thursday, September 28 at 6:30 pm: How to Speak Midwestern with Edward McClelland

Don’t miss an entertaining evening with bestselling author Edward McClelland!  He will talk about his latest book, How to Speak Midwestern, which explains the meanings and origins of local expressions such as the Pittsburgh toilet, squeaky cheese, devil strip, city chicken, shampoo banana, and chevy in the hole.

Ohioans, historians, casual linguists, culturalists, and readers will all enjoy this entertaining program about why Midwesterners talk the way we do.

Copies of McClelland’s book will be available for purchase from the Kent Free Library Foundation by cash or check.  The program is co-sponsored by the Friends of Kent Free Library.

Sunday, September 24 at 2:00 pm: Free Concert with Copali

CopaliCome to the Kent Free Library for a free all-ages concert by Copali on Sunday, September 24 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm.

Copali is an original instrumental jazz fusion band based in Northeast Ohio. Their shows consist of a unique and exciting blend of musical styles. Copali, formed in the summer of 2014, maintains an active presence in the Northeast Ohio music scene. In addition to performing regularly at venues in Akron, Canton, and Kent, they have also performed at the Medina and Highland Square Porch Festivals, First Night Akron, and Akron’s SquareFest.

No registration is required; however because space is limited, audience members must pick up a pass at the 2nd floor Information desk beginning 30 minutes before the event.

Saturday, September 23 at 11:00 am: Dear Evan Hansen

Teens in grades 6 – 12 who love the Broadway musical ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ are invited to the Kent Free Library on Saturday, September 23, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm for a celebration.

Sing along with favorite songs from the Tony Award-winning musical, and bring a t-shirt to decorate with favorite quotes from the show.

Acme Community Cash Back Program is Back!

Again this year, the Kent Free Library will be collecting Acme Fresh Market Store receipts for the Community Cash Back Program.  Bring in your Acme receipts dated August 10, 2017 to December 30, 2017 to help the library earn money to support services and programs!

Community Cash is earned when you purchase the Acme store brands listed to the left.

Sunday, September 17 at 2:00 pm: Paws to Read with Lupin

Reading to certified therapy dogs can benefit reluctant or self-conscious readers, and the Kent Free Library partners with two certified therapy dogs to provide opportunities for children in grades K-5 to “Paws to Read.”
Children in grades K-5 are invited to sign up for a 15 minute time slot to read to Lupin, a certified therapy dog who loves listening to stories. Registration is required and begins one week in advance of each meeting. Registration closes the day before.

Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 am: Balloon Bash

Do you love balloons?  We do too!  Join us as we have an hour of balloon fun at the Balloon Bash!  The fun will include balloon science experiments, parachute play, balloon rockets and more!  Children in Preschool through grade 4 are welcome!

Registration is required and begins September 9. Registration closes at 6 pm the Friday before this program.

New Clubs for Kids Start This Fall

We are pleased to offer 3 new clubs for kids ages 4 – 14 on Fridays this fall. Clubs are a great way to meet and interact with other kids with shared interests.

The Builders Club will meet the third Friday of each month, starting Friday, September 15 from 4 – 5 p.m. Participants can either bring their own Lego and K’Nex bricks or use the library’s to build creations, which can be displayed in the Children’s Room.

Shopkins fans are invited on the fourth Friday of each month, starting Friday, September 22 to play, trade, or just talk Shop.

On the second Friday of each month from 4 – 5 p.m., the Puzzle Club meets to work on puzzles of various sizes and difficulties. Completed puzzles will be displayed in the Dubois Children’s Reading Room with the names of all the children who worked on them.

Both love listening to stories!

Thursday, August 31: Library System Upgrade

The library’s new catalog and circulation system is here!  This new system has many enhanced features, including:

  • Ability to renew materials by phone 24/7
  • An updated catalog that includes records for digital materials from the Ohio Digital Library
  • The ability to opt in to save your checkout history
  • Improved search options that support faceted searching
  • An annual cost savings for Portage County libraries of 35% over the current system

As of Thursday, August 31, the PIN used to place holds or log into our library account will be changed to the last 4 digits of your primary phone number listed on your library account.  You may choose a different PIN when you log on to your account.

Thank you for your patience during this transition, as other library services may also be temporarily limited after August 27.

We look forward to serving you with our new, improved system!

Attention SearchOhio and OhioLINK users:

We temporarily do not have access to SearchOhio and OhioLINK services.  No hold may be placed on materials through those system and currently checked out items may not be renewed.

We hope to have this service reinstated by the end of this year.

Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 pm: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Begins

Witches and wizards ages 7-13 are invited to join us for our School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each session will focus on a different magical class! Registration is required and begins a week in advance of each meeting. Registration closes at 9 pm the Tuesday before each meeting.
