Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 pm: Free Concert by Tree City Winds

Tree City QuintetEnjoy a free family-friendly concert by The Tree City Winds,  a woodwind quintet composed of graduate students from Kent State University. These five players study with the members of the Black Squirrel Winds, Kent State University’s faculty woodwind quintet, and include Sarah Yeates on flute, Melissa Wallace on oboe, Christopher Jones on clarinet, Joshua Thomas on horn, and Zach Elmore on bassoon.

No registration is required; however because space is limited, audience members must pick up a pass at the 2nd floor Information desk beginning 30 minutes before the event.

Monday, March 19 at 6:30 pm: Free Sustainable Film Screening

Monarch Butterfly

Enjoy a free screening of an environmental film followed by a discussion.  The evening is cosponsored by the City of Kent Sustainability Commission and Standing Rock Cultural Arts.

March’s film is about Vico Gutierrez, a Mexican film maker and pilot of a light aircraft glider, named Papalotzin (which means royal butterfly in the Nahuatl language) who, with the help of his crew of four, followed the monarch butterflies on their migration from Canada to Mexico in the Fall of 2005. His trip was sponsored by World Wildlife Fund/Mexico, the State of Michoacan Government, and Telcel, Mexico, along with the help of many butterfly friends all along the route. (Due to licensing restrictions, the library cannot publish the titles of the movies that will be shown.)

No Registration is required.

Saturday, March 10 at 11:00 am: Baby and Toddler Play Date

Families with babies and toddlers, ages 2 months to three years old, are invited to a big, unstructured play date at the Kent Free Library on Saturday, March 10 at 11 am.

Activities and toys from the library’s Kent Rotary Early Literacy Center will be available to encourage early learning experiences, socialization, and imaginative play.

Friday, March 2 at 4:00 pm: Pokemon Club

Bring your cards and decks for some fierce battling and trading!

Registration is not required. This is a drop-in program.

Monday, February 26 at 6:30 pm: Sustainable Film Screening

Enjoy a free screening of an environmental film followed by a discussion at the Kent Free Library on Monday, February 26 at 6:30 pm. The evening is cosponsored by the City of Kent Sustainability Commission and Standing Rock Cultural Arts.

The evening’s film is an update to a 2006 documentary featuring Al Gore about climate change, and shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution (due to licensing restrictions, the library cannot publish the titles of movies that are shown).

No Registration is required.

Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 pm: Miyazaki Film Club

Hayao Miyazaki fans of all ages are invited to a new club. Each month, the club will watch and discuss a feature film that he’s written and directed. Attendees will receive a collectible pin at each meeting.

In order to find out the title of each month’s movie, as well as the movie’s rating and intended audience, please call the Youth Services Department at 330.673.4414.

No registration is required, but space is limited, so boarding passes will be passed out in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room starting at 1:30 p.m.

Monday, Feburary 19 at 7:00 pm: Friends of KFL Annual Meeting

All supporters of the Kent Free Library are invited to the Friends of KFL Annual Meeting.  Learn how the Friends have supported the library in the past year and find out how you can get involved in their 2018 plans.  The Friends offer a variety of volunteer opportunities.

Membership is required to vote during the Annual Meeting, so arrive early for refreshments and to pay your dues–$5 for individuals and $3 for seniors and students.

Tuesday, February 13 from 6:00 – 9:00: Seed Library Packaging Party

Help get the Seed Library ready for planting season by dropping in and packaging seeds that have been donated.  All ages can help out and groups are welcome.

No registration is required.

Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 am: “PAL-entine’s Day” Party

While some people are celebrating Valentine’s Day, we will celebrate friendship with a ‘PAL-entine’s Day’ party for children ages 4 – 12 on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 am.  Bring your best pal along or make a new friend at the party.

Enjoy making unique cards to give away, participating in activities and games, taking silly photos in a photo booth, and making a snack.
