Winter Reading Program Underway

Children in grades 5 and under can pick up a Winter Reading Game Board any time on or after January 3. Once children complete their game boards, they can bring them to the Children’s Room desk and enter for a chance to win one of the grand prizes. Children have until March 3 to complete and turn in their game boards. Prize winners will be notified on Monday, March 6.

Holiday Closings Schedule

Happy_New_YearThe Kent Free Library will be closed on the following dates in observance of the the New Year’s Day holiday:

Saturday, December 31
Sunday, January 1
Monday, January 2

As always when the library is closed, no items are due and no fines are assessed on overdue materials.  Items can be returned either in the drop to the right of the parking lot entrance or by using the drive through return.

Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, January 3 at 9:00 am.

Thursday, December 29 at 6:30 pm: Medicare Program

Graphic for MedicareRaymond Dietz, Certified Insurance Agent, will be on hand on Thursday, December 29, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room to help those who are turning 65, over 65, under 65 and disabled, or family or friends of those dealing with Medicare questions and decisions. Medicare Part A, B, C, D and much more will be covered and updated.

Time will be set aside at the end for Q and A. This program is for adults and registration is requested by calling the Information Desk at 330.673.4414. Spaces are limited.

Thursday, December 22 at 6:30 pm: Interactive Family Movie Night

ticketsJoin us for a special kind of movie where you are involved in almost every scene! Families will be provided with all the props they need to participate with the movie as it progresses! A librarian will watch the movie with you and let you know which props to use and what to do with them. Take a trip to Who-ville and visit Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch!

Registration is required and begins on December 15. Space is limited.

Saturday, December 17 at 11:00 am: Ornament Extravaganza!

cropped-FunHolidayCrafts-LogoFamilies with children ages 5 to 12 years old are invited to join us for a morning full of ornament creation!  We will make a variety of ornaments for you to take home!
Registration is required and begins December 10. Space is limited.

Elf School Returns in December!

Do you have what it takes to be an elf?   Children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited for special program.  We will read holiday books, play reindeer games and make crafts and treats. Each week we will have different activities.

Tuesdays, December 6, December 13 and December 20 at 4:00 pm

Children ages 3 and 4 are invited to join us for Junior Elf School!

Monday, December 12 at 6:00 pm OR Tuesday, December 13 at 1:30 pm

We will read books, play games and enjoy a treat.

Registration is required and begins a week in advance of each program date.

Sunday, December 4 at 2:00 pm: Free Concert with the St. Nicholas Balalaika Orchestra

BalalaikaEnjoy a free all-ages concert with Mogadore’s St. Nicholas Blalaika Orchestra on Sunday, December 4 at 2:00 pm.  Appearing in traditional Russian folk costumes, the St. Nicholas Balalaika Orchestra will perform an extensive program ranging from holiday favorites, poignant romances, to rousing folk dance music.

This all volunteer group of dedicated amateur and professional musicians has strived to preserve and perpetuate the rich heritage and cultural legacy of Russian and Eastern European music on traditional folk instruments for the last 30 years.

Thanksgiving Hours

Turkey Reading a bookThe Kent Free Library will close at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23 and will remain closed through Thursday, November 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.  The library will reopen on Friday, November 25 at 9:00 am.

As always when the library is closed, no items will be due and no late fees will be assessed on overdue items.  Items may be returned to the library through the drive through book drop or in the book drop to the left of the parking lot entrances.

Tuesday, Nov. 15 & Saturday, Nov. 19: ACT Strategies and Practice Test

actHigh school students who plan on taking the ACT test are invited to visit the Kent Free Library on Tuesday, November 15 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.   A Princeton Review expert will go over test content, walk you through some sample questions and show you score-raising strategies to use on test day. Registration is required. Register online with ACT Test Strategies Registration or visit the Youth Services Department and we can assist you with registration.

High School students can also take a practice ACT test are on Saturday, November 19 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Register online with ACT Practice Test Registration  or visit the Youth Services Department and we can assist you with registration.

Wednesday, Nov. 16 & Thursday, Nov. 17: Indoor Gardening and Sourdough Breadmaking Wrap up “How To” Festival

The 2016 Kent Free LibraryOur “How To” Festival is coming to an end!  Many attendees have learned how to enjoy new activities, from bellydancing to beermaking!  Two more programs remain.

Many gardeners lament the end of summer, because they think it means the end of garden-fresh food, or they stopped gardening when they moved into an apartment or condo without access to a yard. Join Don Abbott of Kent Food Not Lawns on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kent Free Library for a free demonstration on how to grow food indoors, year round. All ages are welcome, and attendees will receive free seed packets.

On Thursday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m., which happens to be National Homemade Bread Day, learn how to start and keep a sourdough bread starter for baking your own healthful breads. Learn about the health aspects of gluten and bread. This program is for adults only; attendees will receive a free rye and wheat starter to take home and samples of bread will be provided.
