Monday, January 15: Library Closes for MLK, Jr. Day

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the library will be closed to the public on Monday, January 15.  Staff will be in the building for an inservice day.

As always when the library is closed, no items will be due and no fines will be accrued on overdue items.  For convenience, items may be returned using the drive through or in the drop to the left of the parking lot doors.

The library will open with regular hours on Tuesday, January 16 at 9:00 am.

Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 pm: Miyazaki Movie Club

Drawing of MiyazakiHayao Miyazaki fans of all ages are invited to the first meeting of a new club! Each month, the club will watch and discuss a feature film that he’s written and directed. Attendees will receive a collectible pin at each meeting.

In order to find out the title of each month’s movie, as well as the movie’s rating and intended audience, please call the Youth Services Department at 330.673.4414.

No registration is required, but space is limited, so boarding passes will be passed out in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room starting at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, January 13 at 11:00 am: Ballet Excel Ohio Performs

Ballet Excel Ohio dancingMembers of Ballet Excel Ohio, an all youth dance group, provide a sneak peak of “The Magic Flute,” an original ballet choreographed by Erich Yetter based on the opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for children of all ages at the Kent Free Library on Saturday, January 13 at 11:00 am.

“The Magic Flute” shares the adventures of Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina, along with their crafty companions, Papageno and Papagena. Together they must survive trials, romantic complications, and the scheming Queen of the Night.

Ballet Excel will perform the full ballet at the Akron Civic Theater in March.

No registration is required, but space is limited, so boarding passes will be passed out in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room starting at 10:30 a.m. For more information, please call Youth Services at 330.673.4414.

Tuesday, January 9 at 6:30 pm: How To Play Board Games

The library offers “How-To Tuesdays” this winter. Learn a fun new hobby, a life skill, or some health tips. The first on Tuesday, January 9 at 6:30 pm is How To Play Board games, led by members of the Kent Board Gaming Club.

Learn what games work best for adult gamers and how you can plan an amazing game night with your friends and family.

Tuesday, January 2: Children’s Story Times, Winter Reading Program Begin

The library’s 13-week Winter Story Time Session begins January 2. Nine different story times will be offered for babies, preschoolers, and toddlers, and several story times are geared for all ages. Story Times are led by professional librarians, all of whom have been trained in early childhood literacy.

No pre-registration is necessary for Story Times; arrive a few minutes early to pick up a “boarding pass.” Some sessions have limited space.

Children in grades 5 and under can play the library’s Winter Reading Road Trip. Visit the Dubois Children’s Reading Room to pick up a map, then read books about or by authors from different states. Earn a coupon for a free children’s beverage from Tree City and a grand prize entry after reading 5 books. Read additional books before March 2 for more grand prize entries.

Additional programs are offered through the week for children, tweens, and teens.

Holiday Closings

The library will be closed on Sunday, December 31 and Monday, January 1.  The library will reopen with regular hours on Tuesday, January 2 at 9:00 am.

As always when the library is closed, no items will be due and no fines will be assessed on overdue materials.  Materials may still be returned either in the drops to the left of the parking lot doors or in the drive through.

Get into the holiday spirit with special programs offered by the Youth Services Department!

Holiday Toddler Sensory Play

Tuesday, December 19 at 11:15 am

Families with children ages 2 to 4 years old are invited to join us for messy and creative holiday fun!

Registration is required and begins on December 12. Registration closes at 9 pm the Monday before the program.


Elf School

Tuesday, December 19 and 4:00 pm

Children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade are invited to visit the library to see if they have what it takes to be an elf! We will read holiday books, play reindeer games and make crafts and treats.  Each week we will have different activities.

You must register for each program weekly. Registration is required and begins a week in advance of each program date.


Interactive Family Movie Night

Thursday, December 21st at 6:30 pm

This is a special kind of movie where you are involved in almost every scene. Families will be provided with all the props they need to participate with the movie as it progresses! A librarian will watch the movie with you and let you know which props to use and what to do with them. Enjoy this timeless classic as Charlie and his friends discover the true meaning of Christmas.

Registration is required and begins on December 14. Space is limited. No registration is required.

Dewey, KFL’s Elf on a Shelf, Returns!

Back by popular demand, Dewey, KFL’s mischievous Elf on a Shelf, will return in December.  Be sure to Like the library’s Facebook Page to enjoy Dewey’s antics as he helps bring fun to the holiday season!

Monday December 11 at 6:30 pm: The Magic of a 1950s Christmas

Remember aluminum trees, bubble lights, and decked-out department stores? Hosted by Laura Loew, this presentation will have you reliving great memories of retro holiday celebrations.
This program is family friendly and registration is requested. Spaces are limited; registration is underway.

Library Closes for Thanksgiving

The library will close at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 22 and will remain closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday, November 23.  The library will reopen with regular hours on Friday, November 24 at 9:00 am.

As always when the library is closed, no items will be due and no late fees will be assessed on overdue materials.  For your convenience, materials may be returned through the drive through or in the return bin to the left of the parking lot entrance.
