New Clubs for Kids Start This Fall

We are pleased to offer 3 new clubs for kids ages 4 – 14 on Fridays this fall. Clubs are a great way to meet and interact with other kids with shared interests.

The Builders Club will meet the third Friday of each month, starting Friday, September 15 from 4 – 5 p.m. Participants can either bring their own Lego and K’Nex bricks or use the library’s to build creations, which can be displayed in the Children’s Room.

Shopkins fans are invited on the fourth Friday of each month, starting Friday, September 22 to play, trade, or just talk Shop.

On the second Friday of each month from 4 – 5 p.m., the Puzzle Club meets to work on puzzles of various sizes and difficulties. Completed puzzles will be displayed in the Dubois Children’s Reading Room with the names of all the children who worked on them.

Saturday, September 9 at 11:00 am: Paws to Read

Reading to certified therapy dogs can benefit reluctant or self-conscious readers, and the Kent Free Library partners with two certified therapy dogs to provide opportunities for children in grades K-5 to “Paws to Read.”

Call Youth Services at 330.673.4414 to sign up for a 15 minute time slot to read to Bing, a golden doodle, on Saturday, September 9, between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm or Lupin, a greyhound, on Sunday, September 17 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Both love listening to stories!

Thursday, August 31: Library System Upgrade

The library’s new catalog and circulation system is here!  This new system has many enhanced features, including:

  • Ability to renew materials by phone 24/7
  • An updated catalog that includes records for digital materials from the Ohio Digital Library
  • The ability to opt in to save your checkout history
  • Improved search options that support faceted searching
  • An annual cost savings for Portage County libraries of 35% over the current system

As of Thursday, August 31, the PIN used to place holds or log into our library account will be changed to the last 4 digits of your primary phone number listed on your library account.  You may choose a different PIN when you log on to your account.

Thank you for your patience during this transition, as other library services may also be temporarily limited after August 27.

We look forward to serving you with our new, improved system!

Attention SearchOhio and OhioLINK users:

We temporarily do not have access to SearchOhio and OhioLINK services.  No hold may be placed on materials through those system and currently checked out items may not be renewed.

We hope to have this service reinstated by the end of this year.

Wednesday, September 6 at 4:00 pm: School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Begins

Witches and wizards ages 7-13 are invited to join us for our School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each session will focus on a different magical class! Registration is required and begins a week in advance of each meeting. Registration closes at 9 pm the Tuesday before each meeting.

Monday, August 28 at 7:00 pm: Youth Tech Lab

Teens and Tweens in grades 3 through 12 are invited to join us in a tech lab! At this tech lab, you can test out coding robots, draw with a 3D printing pen and fly a drone. Registration is required and begins on August 21. Space is limited.

Tuesday, August 22 at 9:15 am: Baby/Parent Yoga with Yoga Squirrel

Learn. Play. Namaste. Parents, bring your 0-18 month old for a creative 45 minute yoga class led by Yoga Squirrel. This yoga class focuses on adult and baby and will involve a combination of learning, relaxation, physical fitness and fun.

Registration is required and begins on August 15. Space is limited to 15 baby/parent pairs.

Saturday, August 19 from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm: Escape Room

Families with children of all ages are invited to race against the clock. Can you figure out each of the puzzles and save yourselves before time runs out? Up to 10 people may sign up for a 30-minute time slot.

Registration is required and begins Sunday, August 12. Space is limited.

Thursday, August 17: Kindermusik

Families with babies to 2-year-old children are invited to join us for a 30-minute Kindermusik class from 9:30 – 10:00 am. An instructor from Kindermusik will lead us through music and movement activities. An instructor from Kindermusik will lead us through music and movement activities.

Families with children ages 3 – 5 are invited to join us for a 30-minute Kindermusik class from 10:15 – 10:45 am. An instructor from Kindermusik will lead us through music and movement activities. Children attend this class independently.

Monday, August 14: Children’s Story Times Resume

Kent Free Library’s Fall Story Time session begins on Monday, August 14 and runs for 11 weeks. 9 different weekly story times are offered, with specialized programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, as well as programs for the entire family. Story Times are led by professional Youth Services librarians who have been trained in early childhood literacy.

Registration is not required for story times, but space is limited, so pick up a boarding pass at the desk in the Dubois Children’s Reading Room up to 30 minutes before each program.

A variety of other children’s, tween, and teen programs also get underway, including Tales and Treats on Tuesday afternoons, Tween Zone on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m., Teen Scene on Monday evenings at 7 p.m., the popular Pokemon Club one Wednesday and one Friday each month, and 2 new book clubs for teens and tweens.

Saturday, July 29: Main Street Kent Potterfest Activities at KFL

We are pleased to be a part of Main Street Kent’s Potterfest on Saturday, July 29!  Two presentations by The Ohio Bird Sanctuary featuring three live owls will be offered in our 2nd floor meeting room at 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm. Learn about the owls and get a chance to take a photo with one of them.  No registration is required for this free family program, but as space is limited, attendees must pick up a pass up to 30 minutes before each show.

The library usually closes at 5:00 pm on Saturdays . . . but during Potterfest, hours will be extended for Hogwarts fans to access the ‘Restricted Section’! Stop by from 5:00 – 9:00 pm for family activities, including a scavenger hunt, crafts, a roving balloon artist, and a snack.  No registration is required. Supplies are available on a first come-first served basis and may be limited.
