Fizz Boom READ!
Kent Free Library’s Summer Reading Program 2014
Saturday, June 7 through Saturday, August 2
For students entering K- 5th grade.
Registration for Fizz, Boom, READ! begins on Saturday, June 7 in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room and the program ends on Saturday, August 2.
Upon registering for the summer reading program students will receive an official reading record to record the time they spend reading, either independently or with a favorite grown up. Time is recorded in 15 minute increments, and prizes will be earned for every 5 hours spent reading. Please note that time spent reading before June 7 is not eligible.
Students who complete 20 hours of reading may receive a yard sign to display at home announcing that a Super Reader lives there. Yard signs will be available on a first come, first serve basis until they run out. Let’s see how many Kent Free Super Readers we have in 2014!
We will be having a competition this year to see which grade sends us the most summer readers. Will the Kindergartners beat out the Fifth graders and send us the most summer readers? Watch the back window of the DuBois Children’s Reading Room to see which grade is winning!
Our younger readers in preschool will receive their own reading record to receive prizes when they have completed two and five hours of reading with a favorite adult. Our preschool readers will also get to vote in our popular Care For a Critter Contest every time they complete an hour of reading.
Care For A Critter
The fifth annual Care For a Critter Contest returns! Kids registered in the Summer Reading Program will have the opportunity to vote for which animal the library will sponsor at the Akron Zoo at the end of the summer. Watch for the Kent Free Library Youth Services librarians to show pictures of the animals when they visit all of the elementary school classrooms in May to discuss Fizz, Boom READ! Posters of the animals will be on display in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room all summer long. Readers will earn one vote for each hour of reading they record.
Will you vote for the African Lion, the Alpaca, the Hedgehog, the Chilean Flamingo or the Giant Pacific Octopus?
