Every Hero Has a Story!
Kent Kiwanis Summer Reading @ Kent Free Library
For students entering pre-K- 5th grade.
Registration for Every Hero Has a Story! begins on Monday, June 1 in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room and the program ends on Friday, July 31.
Upon registering for the summer reading program students will receive an official reading record to record the time they spend reading, either independently or with a favorite grown up. Time is recorded in 15 minute increments, and prizes will be earned for every 5 hours spent reading. Please note that time spent reading before June 1 is not eligible.
Students who complete 20 hours of reading may receive a free book, a Kent Free Library Super Reader static cling sticker and have their photo taken and displayed in the Children’s Room on the Super Reader Wall of Fame. Let’s see how many Kent Free Super Readers we have in 2015!
We will be having a competition this year to see which grade sends us the most summer readers. Will the Kindergartners beat out the Fifth graders and send us the most summer readers? Watch the back window of the DuBois Children’s Reading Room to see which grade is winning!
Care for a Critter
The sixth annual Care for a Critter Contest returns! Kids registered in the Summer Reading Program will have the opportunity to vote for which animal the library will sponsor at the Akron Zoo at the end of the summer. Watch for the Kent Free Library Youth Services librarians to show pictures of the animals when they visit all of the elementary school classrooms in May to discuss Every Hero Has a Story! Posters of the animals will be on display in the DuBois Children’s Reading Room all summer long. Readers will earn one vote for each hour of reading they record.
Teen Summer Reading Program
For Students Entering Grades 6 to 12
For every two books that you read you will receive a scratch off ticket– will you be a winner or not? Will you win a variety of coupons for local businesses or will you have to try again? Each scratch off ticket will be an entry for the Grand Prize at the end of the Summer Reading Program.
Any books you read after June 1 count towards tickets. You get one ticket for every two books you read. You can begin getting scratch off tickets on Wednesday, June 3rd. Registration is required, just come to the Children’s Room Desk on the second floor, and sign-up! The last day to get a scratch off ticket and enter for the Grand Prize drawing is Friday, July 31.
