2017 Summer Reading Program
Build a Better World
June 1 – August 5
Registration for 2017’s Summer Reading Program, Build a Better World, begins Thursday, June 1 in the Children’s Room. Upon registering for the program, participants will receive an official reading record to use to track reading they complete throughout the summer. Reading time is recorded in 15-minute increments, and participants will earn prizes for every five hours of reading they finish. Reading can be completed independently or with others. Please note that times spent reading prior to June 1, 2017 is not eligible. The program ends Saturday, August 5.
Participants who finish the Summer Reading Program (20 hours of reading) will receive a book of their choosing from Scholastic. “Super Reader” bookplates will be placed inside each book to commemorate the receiver’s status as a 2017 Kent Free Library Super Reader! Books will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until they are gone. Can you achieve Super Reader status in 2017? Book incentives are generously sponsored by Kent Kiwanis, Kent Free Library Foundation’s Cecil Bumphrey Fund, and the ACME Community Cashback program.
Watch for the NEW summer challenge this year. The challenge is open to children, teens, and adults. Simply complete challenges to earn buttons to pin on a lanyard. Each completed challenge earns the participant a different button.
The library’s annual competition to see which elementary grade sends us the most summer readers returns. In 2016, for the second year in a row, students entering second grade had the most readers. Which grade will have the most summer readers this year? Watch the windows of the DuBois Children’s Reading Room to see which grade is in the lead.
Care for a Critter
The Care for a Critter Contest returns for an eighth year. Participants in the Summer Reading Program will be able to vote for the Akron Zoo animal they want the library to sponsor at the end of the summer. Readers earn one vote for each hour of reading they complete. Each of the five animals in this year’s contest are known for their building skills or use of natural structures. Kent Free Library Librarians will reveal photos of each animal when they visit the Kent elementary schools in May. Be sure to check out the Care for a Critter posters in the Children’s Room this summer.
Teen Summer Reading Program
June 1 – August 5
Students entering grades 6-12 can win prizes for reading over the summer. Earn scratch-off tickets for the books you’ll be reading anyway—each ticket is a chance to win great prizes like gift cards to local businesses, KSU gear, free books, and more. Each ticket is also a Grand Prize entry that you can use to try to win one of our exciting Teen Grand Prizes. Past Grand Prizes include Rubber Ducks Tickets, Off the Wagon gift cards, and Midway Drive-In passes.
Here’s how it works: Registration for the program begins June 1 and you can begin collecting tickets on Saturday, June 3. Registration is required—just come to the Youth Services desk on the second floor to sign up. You earn one ticket for every two books you read. The last day to get a scratch-off ticket and enter for the Grand Prize drawing is Saturday, August 5, 2017.
