For children, reading time is recorded in 15-minute increments, and participants earn prizes for every five hours of reading they finish. Reading can be completed independently or with others. Please note that time spent reading prior to May 24, 2018 is not eligible.
This year, participants who finish the Summer Reading Program (20 hours of reading) will receive a book of their choosing! “Reading Rock Star” bookplates will be placed inside each book to commemorate the receiver’s status as a 2018 Kent Free Library Reading Rock Star! Books will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until they are gone. Can you achieve Rock Star status in 2018? Back by popular demand are summer challenges, which children, teens, and adults can complete to earn buttons to pin on a Kent Free Library lanyard! Each completed challenge earns a new and different button!
We will be holding our annual competition to see which grade sends us the most summer readers. In 2017, for the third year in a row, second graders had the most readers! Which grade will send us the most summer readers this year? Watch the back windows of the DuBois Children’s Reading Room to see which grade is winning!
Teens can win cool prizes just for reading this summer in our Teen Summer Reading Program! New this year, spin our prize wheel to earn your prizes. After every two books you read you earn a chance to spin the wheel and win great prizes like gift cards for local businesses, KSU gear, free books, and more! After each spin you’ll also be given a Grand Prize entry that you can use to try to win one of our exciting Teen Grand Prizes! Past Grand Prizes include Rubber Ducks Tickets, Off the Wagon gift cards, and Midway Drive-In passes. You get one spin for every two books you read. The last day to spin the wheel and enter for the Grand Prize drawing is Saturday, August 4, 2018.
But why should the kids have all the fun? Adults can sign up too! Complete and submit brief reviews of the books you read to be entered into drawings for gifts cards! In addition, pick up a bookmark with “challenges” to complete around town. For every challenge you complete, you’ll receive a button!
