May is National Pet Month

May is National Pet Month, and the Kent Free Library is honoring four-legged family members.  All month, drop off supplies at the Information Desk for the Portage Animal Protective League, which is dedicated to the care and welfare of abused, abandoned, sick, and injured animals.  Check out the wish list for the shelter.

The library will hold weekly programs on making toys and treats for your fur babies—visit for the schedule and information about registration.  Also, enter a pet-themed contest at the Check Out.

On Sunday, May 20 at 2 pm, local steel drum duo Dog Friendly will perform a free all-ages concert.

In addition, bring your dog along when you use the drive through book drop or pick up window to get a treat and to have your photo taken for the library’s Facebook page!

Saturday, May 12: Kindermusik

An instructor from Kindermusik will lead us through a 30-minute class with music and movement activities.
Families with babies to 2-year-old children are invited from 10:30am – 11:00 am
Families with children ages 3 – 5 are invited from 11:15am – 11:45 am. Children attend this class independently.

Friday, May 11 at 4:00 pm: Puzzle Club

Children ages 4-14 can work together to complete puzzles of various sizes and difficulties. Participants can work on as many puzzles as they like.  After each puzzle is completed, it will be displayed with the names of each child who worked on it.

No registration is required.

Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 am: Celebrate American Girl Felicity

American Girl fans in grades K-6 are invited to celebrate all things Felicity! Bring your Felicity, other American Girl, or any other doll and learn more about Felicity’s time period.

Enjoy fun games and activities that Felicity herself would have enjoyed, including human- and doll-sized crafts (for dolls around 18” tall).

Wednesday, April 24 at 7:00 pm: Joe the Coupon Guy®-Cut the Cable Cord

Joe Daugirdas, aka The Coupon Guy®, will give a free presentation on how to save money by cutting cable subscriptions. Learn about cost effective alternatives like streaming services.

Daugirdas has been honing his shopping skills in the Northeast Ohio area for many years. He also teaches the “Savvy Shopper” class at Lakeland Community College, along with “Choosing Cell Phones”, a class designed to help people find the best cell phone deals. He has also taught classes on how to save money on gasoline/natural gas, weddings, travel, and a class for teenagers.

Daugirdas has been featured on TV, including CBS, ABC, FOX, and NBC News. He has been on several radio shows including NPR, Family Matters with Caroline and Jacquie, and WTAM 1100 AM radio. He can be heard on WINT 1330 AM every Wednesday at 7:18 AM.

Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 am: Camp Caterpillar

Eric Carle's CaterpillarFamilies with children ages 3 -12 are invited for a morning filled with crafts, snacks, and games based on Eric Carle’s famous picture books, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar. To register, contact Youth Services at 330.673.4414.

April 19 – 21: Friends of KFL Book Sale

The Friends of Kent Free Library will hold their spring books sale April 19 – 21 on the first floor of the library. For sale will be books, audiobooks, magazines, music CDs, and DVDs for adults and children that have been donated by community and that have been withdrawn from the library’s collection.

Friends of KFL members are invited to a preview sale on Thursday, April 19 from 5 – 8 p.m. Memberships may be purchased at the door and are $5 for individuals and $3 for students or seniors. Regular sale hours are Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Cash or check are accepted. All proceeds go to the Friends of KFL and support library programs and services. This year, Friends have donated $6,000 to the library, including support for the monthly music program, craft supplies and equipment for adult programs, a train table and a magnetic table for the Children’ Room, and a tablet for use in children’s programs. They will also provide support for the Summer Reading Program.

Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 pm: Free Concert with The Gospel Wonders

The Gospel WondersEnjoy a free all-ages concert with the Gospel Wonders. The Gospel Wonders is a men’s group with members from various area churches. They have been performed all around Northeastern Ohio for over 25 years. They have released a CD and have also opened for national recording artists such as Lee Williams and the Highway QC’s, The Gospel Keynotes, Dottie Peoples, Pilgrim Jubilees, Luther Barnes and the Sunset Jubilees and Howard Hewitt.

No registration is required, but since space is limited, audience members should pick up a pass at the 2nd floor Information Desk starting at 1:30 the day of the concert.

Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 pm: Sustainable Film Screening

New Zealand Landscape

Enjoy a free screening of an environmental film followed by a discussion.  The evening is cosponsored by the City of Kent Sustainability Commission and Standing Rock Cultural Arts.

April’s film is by Young Blood Productions and chronicles the experiences of American journalist, Katie Young, who leaves her job to search for a more promising future by traveling to New Zealand to learn about Permaculture. Watch Young navigate through a foreign country, while conflicting with her ideals and American standard of living, trying to combine modern convenience with sustainability. (Due to licensing restrictions, the library cannot publish the titles of the movies that will be shown.)

No Registration is required.

Monday, April 9 at 6:00 pm: Cocoro

Ages 5 to 11 and their grown-ups can enjoy building fun on Monday, April 9 at 6 pm when Norio Kids visits the library for Cocoro. Use premade cardboard materials to make a model of a playhouse and then work together to create a large playhouse. For more information about Norio Kids and Cocoro, visit their website at
