Kids’ Summer Reading Wraps Up Aug 3

The Kids’ Summer Reading Program will wrap up on Saturday, August 3–but there’s still time to bring in your reading records to get your Care for a Critter votes, entries for prizes, and for Super Readers, your yard sign!

So far, Kent Kids have read a combined total of 3,165 hours–wow!  Lots of kids have earned their “Home of a Super Reader” yard sign, but there are still plenty left for kids who complete 20 hours of reading.

In other news, the Komodo Dragon has pulled ahead of the early leader, the Burrowing Owl, in the Care For a Critter Contest.  Team Owl, keep reading and earning votes!  Longcoy Elementary School has sent us the most summer readers with 83 readers signed up–great job Longcoy!

Mark your calendars for Friday August 2 to come to one of two Akron Zoomobile programs, at 1:00 pm and at 2:00 pm.  There’s no registration, but show up no more than 1/2 hour before each program to get  your boarding pass–space will be limited.

Burrowing Owl Takes the Lead in Care for a Critter

Summer Reading Program participants have cast the most votes for the burrowing owl in the library’s Care for a Critter Contest!  If the owl maintains the lead for the rest of the summer, the library will adopt it from Akron Zoo.  Are you a fan of the gila monster or the coyote?  Then keep reading to earn votes to cast for your favorite!

Youth Photo Contest Underway

We’re hosting our 7th annual summer photo contest for students entering grades 5 – 8. Participants should pick up contest rules and entry forms in the Children’s Room. Prints of photos may be submitted at any time until Saturday, July 13. Each photographer may submit two entries.

All photos submitted will be on display in the Children’s Room from July 15 through July 31 for the public to view and vote for their favorites. The photographers of the top vote-getting photographs will each receive Target Gift Cards.
