Gear up for the Olympics!

olympicsChildren ages 5 and up are invited to gear up for the Winter Olympics on Saturday, February 1, at 11:00 am.  Play games to get into the Olympic spirit, make a craft, and enjoy a snack.

Registration is required and begins Saturday, January 25. Please stop by or call the Youth Services Department at 330.673.4414.

Chinese New Year Concert, Jan. 19

Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble 3The Kent Free Library will host the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble for a free concert celebrating the Chinese New Year on Sunday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m.

The Ensemble will present a program of graceful and festive music, including several pieces about horses, as this is the Year of the Horse, interspersed with historical Chinese stories and poems about horses.

Formed in the fall of 2008, the Ensemble plays on an assortment of traditional Chinese musical instruments, including bamboo flutes, mouth organs, fiddles, lutes, gongs, drums, cymbals, and other percussion. They even invite audience members to try out some instruments on a few numbers.

Healthcare Reform and the Insurance Marketplace

Martin P. Hauser, Chief Executive Officer of SummaCare Inc. and Chief Government Relations Officer for Summa Health System, will discuss the state and local impact of the Affordable Care Act. Hauser will cover the insurance marketplaces that opened to consumers this fall, post-reform strategies for employers, and the essential health benefits covered under the law. He’ll also answer the important question, “What happens next?”

Winter Reading Program Starts Jan 4

Winter Reading Program LogoThe Library’s fourth annual winter reading program begins Saturday, January 4 and runs through March 1.

Kids in preschool through grade 5 can collect snowflakes for attending library programs, checking out library materials, or filling out book reviews. Each snowflake earned is a raffle entry for a chance to win prizes, including popular books, DVDs, and a rainbow loom.

Teens in grades 6-12 can earn a Bingo card for reading and attending library programs and also have the chance to win prizes.

Beatles Scholar Returns

Beatles scholar, blogger, and teacher Aaron Krerowicz returns on Saturday, January 4 at 2 pm with another fascinating presentation about the Beatles.

Krerowicz’s presentation will use audio excerpts of early drafts and discarded takes to bring to life the history and development of the album “Strawberry Fields Forever,” considered one of the Beatles’ greatest musical and artistic accomplishments, which established the Fab Four as a studio band rather than a concert band.
